Social Networking applications on LinkedIn

In my view the new applications just announced are another major plus for LinkedIn in the Business to Business social networking space. This new set of functionality will enable LinkedIn to move beyond the recruitment and contact management space and therefore make it even more compelling for people to be on there.

So here is a quick overview of the new applications:

Company Buzz – on the face of it, this seems like a great application. It gives you the ability to monitor what is being said, by others, about your company. It’s taking data directly from Twitter, so it should prove very useful. I say should, because the application has been down since the launch. No real surprise, anyone remember the old days when you were suddenly able to add a picture to LinkedIn – well it took a few weeks for the service to bed in. We have asked one of our clients to test it out so that we can all get a better idea of how useful it could be. It’s always nice to have a client who is happy to test these things with us.

The WordPress app is a long overdue bolt-on. Now you can post a blog once, and reach out to nearly all your networks automatically. Great news as no one platform is going to be the sole source of your network.

I’m not convinced yet by Google Docs, after all, this functionality already exists in Google Docs, but heh, if you want a single point of contact for everything then fine.

Huddle Workspace looks interesting. The presentation upload via Google docs seems a bit flakey, but we got there eventually. I have managed to upload a presentation, but it appears at the bottom of the Summary on your Profile page, so if you want to make an impact with your presentation, then you will need to re-write your profile to get the slides appearing above the scroll.

The Amazon book list is a neat little tool, I’ve already ordered a book that someone in my network has posted a review on – this could get expensive!

As I review more of these applications we will publish a more detailed analysis.
